That’s because everyone thinks there own way is the only way to do things. Me? I play both sides. Do I think winter tires and summer tires are better in their respective seasons? Of course they are. Will I ever switch to using two separate sets of wheels and tires? Absolutely not

The responses to these articles are usually absolutely stupid. Like, as asinine as a freaking gun debate. Both sides suck at making a decent point.

Hey man, if you don’t want to pony up for wear items for your car, knock yourself out. When you flip it on the highway and slow traffic down, just keep a heads up for the half full coffee cup i’m gonna lob at your head as I pass.

As I posted during the last big snowstorm up here in WI, it comes down to driver skill. Tires, LSD, AWD, 4WD are all worthless if the driver is incompetent. Up until I bought the car I am driving now, I have only ever had 2WD cars with all season tires. I have never crashed, and I have only gotten stuck ONCE in my life.

“Canada has laws against using anything other than winter tires, therefore if you live anywhere other than Canada you should do what Canada does” - arguments used primarily by pro-winter tire people
Like sure that makes sense when you live in Hoth but not in a country where most of it does get summer

It’s particularly funny to me, because they’re both right in this one. You don’t need winter tires, but winter tires do work better. I bought a set a few years ago, they make driving in snow even more fun, but you don’t NEED them. And yet they just shout the same things over and over at each other.

If people would stop using the word “need” it would be tolerable.
Barely.

I’m definitely mixed in it. I got snow tires for my wife’s car because she’s on interstates and will have to deal with more idiots there. She also isn’t as good (still far better than most non enthusiasts) when it comes to snow driving. I drive back roads so it all comes down to my ability. I know that my snow driving abilities on all seasons will be better than most average drivers on any tires.

I would imagine LSD might contribute to the driver being incompetent. :P :)

How are they going to flip it? You need traction to flip, they’ll just slide with those non snow tires.
Because physics.

They always find a way to flip it. :D In Chicago, most people seem to enjoy sliding off highway off-ramps...then figuring out how to roll a car that’s sliding through the snow.

And it’s even more amusing that these people live in areas where it snows every year. I mean, it shouldn’t be new to anyone out here. lol

It’s the perfect excuse for 2 cars. One for winter with snow tires and one for summer with summer tires. Hey I might be able to get a third car for when it rains hmmmm.

In some places you might not “need” snow tires....This is my drive way after i plowed it with my Subaru, heavy ass snow about a foot deep on a driveway with a 12% grade..the snow is about 6 feet deep in my yard and we are expecting 1-2 feet tomorrow...needless to say with out snow tires I wouldn’t be able to leave the house most days. Especially in 2wd cars....hell most the streets in town have this same grade on them at some point...it’s funny to watch 2wd cars get stuck even with Chains on....because they don’t maintain momentum.

It’s because everyone has their own experience. I live in west michigan. We average like 5 feet of snow every year. We are freezing for half the year. Snow tires make sense. Southern Kansas? Good all seasons will work for the two days a year you get an inch or two of snow. Florida? Well any snow Florida gets is likely to be from a cocaine spill soooooo......yeah.

Ditto. I ball on a budget. Swapping tyres usually costs me like $20-$25 per wheel...not including the cost of the tyres themselves. So that’s an at least $80-$100 expense every 6 months...when it’s not even guaranteed that my tyres will ever see snow? Shoot, by time I usually get on the roads, the plows have already eradicated all the dangerous stuff.
Then there’s the whole storage and transportation problem. As much as I love to prove that my car can eat some big arse things, I hate transporting dirty tyres.
